10月18日 Location, Location, LocationIf you're still reading this here, make a note of my new "address." My buddy Ron Davis (of "Ron Davis List" fame) set me up with some space and a WordPress site on his server, so I'm writing over there now. Please update your bookmarks/RSS feeds. I will be writing a lot more than I used to since it's so much easier now to type up a quick blog post.
http://www.forwheelers.net/blog/ 10月2日 Maybe I Have Been Wrong About Circuit City...For months now (maybe the better part of a year), I have been trying to convince all my friends to eschew the evil blue and yellow store (for various reasons) and start shopping at Circuit City whenever possible. Well, after today's experience, maybe I was wrong. I still hate shopping at Best Buy (for more reasons than I can count), but Circuit City may make it onto my list too if they're not careful. I wandered in to check and see if they got the new Zelda game for the DS in yet. Their in-store ad and their mailer both say, "In stores by 2pm." Keep in mind this is just a Circuit City promise. This is not a publisher-mandated street date or anything like that. They just state that their truck will get there sometime morning or early afternoon and they'll have it for you by 2pm. When I didn't see it, I started looking for someone to help me. This is where my Circuit City opinion started tracking downward. This has happened the last several times I've been in the store and frankly, if they don't fix the problem, it's going to turn me away. There were no employees in sight. The closest guy was 50 or 60 meters away in the computer department or busy in the garage in Mobile Audio. There was no one that appeared to be working the games section. So, I sojourned off to the computer department to find...let's call him Michael. He was talking to a girl (not an employee), but she did not look at all like she was shopping for anything. They were standing in the laptop aisle and all the laptops near them were off and/or closed, so I can't imagine she was in the market for one. After looking my way and seemingly willing to speak with me (a mistake I apparently made by misreading his face which it later became clear was pretty blank most of the time), I asked him about the game. His answer? Not, "I'll check." Not, "No, we haven't gotten it in." No. His answer was that he didn't think the truck had come in yet (ok, maybe he really didn't think so) and even if they had it, they couldn't sell it until 2pm. What?! Keep in mind what I said earlier about this not being a street-dated item or having any restrictions from the publisher. Also, it's now about 12:15. You can't sell it until 2pm? I told him that was stupid and just got a blank stare and a generic "corporate policy" response. He didn't even try to check to see if it was really in or not. Just, "No, we can't sell it." Maybe I was just cranky from being hungry (ask my wife, she'll tell you you don't want to mess with me when I'm hungry), but I stalked out of the store. I really didn't want to go somewhere else. In the end, I shouldn't have because this tale has no happy ending. Circuit City, if this really is corporate policy, it's stupid. Do you really want to turn a customer away who takes his lunch break, travels to your store willing to spend money to buy an item and then gets told it can't be sold until 2pm for no reason whatsoever? If that's not really corporate policy (and it wouldn't take much trying to convince me it's not), then I pity you for having hired Michael. Please also make sure you staff your stores. While Best Buy is annoying and overpriced (they recently started charging an average of $3 above MSRP for Xbox360 accessories), you can't walk 10 steps without tripping over a blue-shirted employee. Mistake #2 was stopping at Wal-Mart on the way back to the office. My only excuse is that it is literally right on the way and that I've gotten good deals there before (games that were supposed to be $60 and I got them for $50 on launch day). After walking the half mile through every department to the very back of the store (why is electronics always in the back) and searching a bit for an employee working electronics (is this a normal "electronics store/dept" problem?) the nice girl named Rashunda (I swear!) physically went into the back storeroom to check for me. Unfortunately, they didn't have it yet and my 10 minute walk in from my car was wasted. At least I didn't just get a blank stare or some mindless corporate policy line. 5月10日 Something NewI'm trying out something new. I have been using Technorati for a little while now to snoop on anyone that posts on Safe Eyes or Safebrowse.com. Yesterday, I mentioned Safe Eyes and already this morning, they had picked it up! So, here is my personal profile on Technorati's site. Technorati Profile 5月9日 I am a horrible, horrible bloggerFirst of all, an apology. My new job at Safebrowse.com (writing the #1 rated parental control software, Safe Eyes) keeps me a lot busier than my previous job. So, I rarely have time to post here. I always feel like I shouldn't bother if I can't give you, the reader, something worthwhile and "meaty." I've also taken up/rekindled several hobbies recently such as playing guitar (I bought a sweet Schecter electric guitar), playing Xbox360 (Gears of War rocks), and watching Planet Earth on HD-DVD. A word about Planet Earth (HD-DVD): BUY IT! Ok, that was two words. Here's two more: If you can't buy it, RENT IT! So, I lied again. What little I've seen of it rocks. This is a reason to have an HDTV and the HD-DVD player for the 360 (or a standalone unit if you're just made of money). Oh, and lastly, my blog will be moving soon. A friend of mine offered to host it and turn it into a Wordpress site (which, he tells me, is pretty cool), so I'll be moving it over to his server, trying to archive my posts here, and eventually abandoning Live Spaces. It was a nice run, but I just want something that's not so heavily tied to Microsoft and Windows. Oh, and as Steve Jobs is fond of saying, "One more thing..." I put some more pictures and stuff up at our family website. Check it out if you have voyeuristic tendencies or if you just like me. 1月12日 Why, UPS, why?For Christmas, I was given a green 4GB iPod Nano by my wife. I love it. I have been listening to it so much, I'm going to cancel my Sirius satellite radio subscription because I don't feel like I need it anymore. I ordered a cable to go between my iPod and my Kenwood head unit in my car. It's a basic cable from a third-party company (not from Kenwood because theirs disables all navigation via the iPod wheel) that pipes the audio into the proprietary auxiliary port on the back of the Kenwood and charges the iPod all through the one cable/connector. Originally, I had planned on getting it from Amazon.com (via Crutchfield). Well, I put off ordering it and suddenly, the other day, it went out of stock at Crutchfield/Amazon. So, I had to scour the internet and finally found a place called ShipSound.com to get it from which was actually a few bucks cheaper than Crutchfield. So, what does that have to do with UPS? I'm getting to that. Those of you that read this blog know I'm a bit on the wordy side. So, it shipped out yesterday morning-ish via UPS Ground. It shipped from Nashville. We are about 3.5 hours from Nashville. This morning at 3:15am (according to UPS's tracking website) it was in Doraville, GA at the distribution center. Will it be delivered today? No. Because I ordered it Ground instead of paying a premium for overnight or 2-day, they're going to make sure that it takes a little extra time to get to me. They show an estimated delivery of Monday, January 15th. JERKS! I could have it in my possession now, but NOOOOOOO, they're going to hold it up just to punish me for not paying for expedited shipping even though it shouldn't take more than a day to get here from Nashville! 12月17日 MacHeistLooking for some cool Mac software along with an easy way to donate a few bucks to one of about a dozen charities? Check out MacHeist.com. It started out as a secretive Cloak-and-Dagger thing and no one really had a clue what it was all about. Turns out it was a bunch of indie software developers that write some of the coolest Mac software on the planet getting together to offer a bundle of 10 great shareware Mac apps for $49 (you get full licenses for that $49). In addition, they donated 20% of every purchase to a charity that you get to choose (from a list). So far, they've raised well over $150,000 and sold more than 15,000 bundles. I bought one for myself and one for my Mac-loving guru/friend/boss as a Christmas present. So far, my favorite app may be the most creative use of the iSight camera I've yet seen--you scan the ISBN barcode with the camera, it searches Amazon and pulls all the info on the book, movie, or audio album and adds it to your library. It's called Delicious Library and you can see more about it here. Way cool and a simple way to catalog your collection of media. Here's a list of the apps that are included and a short summary. I didn't include all the links--if you want to know more, go to the main MacHeist page and click on each app from there to read a longer summary and get a link to download a trial version of each application Delicious Library - Media library organizer that allows you to scan the barcode of the item to enter it in the library FotoMagico - Photo organizer ShapeShifter - Theme app to customize your Mac desktop DEVONThink Personal - Document organizer/repository Disco - Disc-burning software RapidWeaver - Website building application iClip - Clipboard organize One Pangea Game - Choice of one game from Pangea (I picked Enigmo 2) NewsFire - RSS aggregator TextMate - Text editor on steroids UPDATE: If you're reading this now, it's too late to jump on this Macheist bundle, but I'll keep an eye out for next time! You can always buy any one (or more) of the individual apps to support the authors and the Mac software development community. Visit the MacHeist home page for details, but they raised over $190,000 for charity and sold almost 17,000 bundles! 12月16日 Wal-Mart Optical: 1 | Optix/Classic Vision Care: 0Most of my blogging friends have had their opportunities to post rants about various businesses around here. They range from Chilitos and their chips to BellSouth and Marietta Jeep/Dodge (both of those last two I heartily agree with). Now, it's my turn. The story starts a week or so before Thanksgiving when I had an appointment at Optix Eye Care in Dallas, GA to have my eyes examined to update my contact prescription. Dr. Becker (who also has an office in Kenensaw called Classic Vision Care), did a fine job of checking my eyes out and sent me on my way to return the day before Thanksgiving for my followup exam. Oh, but they didn't have any trial lenses to give me. They said they'd order them and call me when they get in. Forward to Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving) and I leave work early for my followup appointment. I got there and they were closed. Door locked, "Open" sign shut off. I left them a voicemail stating that I was here and nobody else was and to please call me back. Guess what, no call-back. So, I begin calling them every couple of days the week after that trying to get a hold of someone. Message after message was not returned. Finally, I just go up there when they're supposed to be open and find note on the door that as of 12/8, the Optix location will be closed. I leave my name and number with a lady that's boxing up the sample glasses frames and she promises they'll call me back. Guess what? No call-back. Finally, a few weeks has passed, the office is now vacant with a sign on the door stating that all patients are being handled by Dr. Becker's office in Kennesaw, Classic Vision Care. I call them. The desk-girl takes my name and number and promises I'll receive a call back. Guess what--yeah, you guessed it, no call-back. So, at this point, I'm done with them. They haven't charged my credit card for the exam/2 boxes of contact lenses that I was supposed to get for my $99 and if they ever do, I'll dispute the charges. I would not recommend going to Dr. Becker's office (wherever he may open one up) for anything. While he was nice, this satellite office closure was not handled at all well. Now, on to the good part of the story. Wal-Mart Vision Center was awesome. The doctor was spectacular and an expert on contact lenses. As a walk-in on a Saturday, I got a nearly immediate exam. She recommended a new brand of lenses that so far feel great. They had the trial lenses for my prescription (a rather high one). She even gave me two pair so that when we go on vacation to Washington state in about a week, I'll have an extra in case something happens! Now, that's service. Kudos to Wal-mart Vision Center in Dallas, GA and Dr. Keesha Hampton. Proof That Microsoft Just Can't Pull Off "Apple" Very WellMicrosoft has made a sorry attempt to spoof the "I'm a Mac/I'm a PC" commercials done by Apple. It's a Zune-toting PC guy (not nearly as geeky as John Hodgman) and an iPod toting Mac guy (much much goofier than Justin Long) talking about how easy it is to share songs on their respective platforms. The only highlight of the whole commercial is the Mac guy jumping away and saying his buddy's iPod scratches easily. Too bad that was last generation's iPods, Microsoft. Click for the link. |
